Project Proposal
Nine Kims
My proposal is in total 120 x 60 inches, constructed of three panels. Each panel is a 40x20 in. ink-jet print mounted on foam core. The piece will be relativity light and will be mounted above the stage with velcro strips on the back. The alternate location is on the orange and blue wall- given it being ok that it covers up the window. The images are all screen shots of Instagram images. They consist of two layers, one being an image from Kim Kardashians account ( the #1 followed person on the platform) as well as different covers of Time Magazine. The size is meant to be relative to the viewer, making it easier to place one in the subjects place.
I’m interested in the icon and the celebrity as a sort of heroic figure. Much in the way Marilyn Monroe was depicted in the 70’s when Warhol did his Nine Marilyns series. Kim Kardashian is thought of in a similar light today. By placing the ghostly image of Kim onto of Time magazine covers I hope to bring into light the mass of attention that a person can draw with an excellent branding strategy. And how that can be used to bring to light larger issues to a demographic that wouldn't typically be concerned with issues mentioned on the cover of Time. The overlapping text is to push this idea even further with attention placed on the image and the text becoming ambitious and confusing- like most of the Time articles come off to the general public. Instagram is particularly interesting to me because much like the magazine was the primary source of visual information in the 70’s- Instagram is that for us today. It’s reliable and always feeding us information that we often don't pause to question.
