Opus Biennial
OPUS is an interdisciplinary art and music biennial set within a forest outside Washington, D.C., exploring the intersection of science, nature, technology, and culture through immersive public experiences.
As Founding Artistic Director and Producer, Caroline Maxwell developed the curatorial vision, partnership strategy, and commissioning program for the initiative. Designed as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, OPUS brought together scientists, artists, musicians, technologists, and researchers to engage audiences with environmental themes through large-scale installations, performances, virtual reality experiences, and experimental media.
Since its founding in 2017, OPUS has commissioned more than 75 international collaborators and welcomed over 30,000 attendees. Projects developed through the platform have gone on to be presented at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Barbican Centre, and Pioneer Works, and have been featured at platforms such as Red Bull Music Academy, FORM Arcosanti, and Le Guess Who.
Featured collaborators have included Yoko Ono, Agnes Denes, Marilyn Minter, Mark Leckey, Oneohtrix Point Never, Caroline Polachek, Genesis P-Orridge, and Suzanne Dikker, among others.
By creating a space where artistic experimentation, scientific inquiry, and public engagement could intersect, OPUS demonstrated how cultural programming can foster new conversations around the future of technology, ecology, and society.
